February is Black History Month ...

Hello NACS family,

This month we recognize Black History month. As Christians we know that in the eyes of God we are all equal. Unfortunately, that is not the nature of man. The identity of a race has been removed, along with their name, culture and a sense of self. For too long people of color were told they were less than, that they did not belong and that they were academically inferior. For those reasons and others, Black History month was established to recognize the achievement of African Americans and their contributions to the United States.

Here is a small sampling of their accomplishments:

  • Matthew Henson — First man to reach the North Pole (1909)

  • Gwendolyn Brooks — Won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry (1950)

  • Granville T. Woods — Invented the induction telegraph, which allowed train-to-train station communication, preventing many rail accidents. (1887)

  • Garrett Morgan — Invented the gas mask, which saved thousands of lives during World War I, when poisonous gas was first used; he also invented the modern traffic signal. (1912)

  • Lewis Latimer — Edison may have invented the concept, but Latimer added the carbon filament that made the lightbulbs last longer and commercially viable.

  • Daniel Hale Williams — Performed the first open heart surgery, which was the first time the chest cavity had ever been opened without the patient dying of an infection. (1893)

  • Dr. Charles Drew  Invented a technique for the long-term preservation of blood plasma. Prior to his discovery, blood could only be stored for two days. Dr. Drew also discovered that everyone has the same type of plasma, regardless of blood type, making plasma transfusions universal.

Verse of the Month

“Let us be concerned for one another, to help one another to show love and to do good. Let us not give up the habit of meeting together, as some are doing. Instead, let us encourage one another all the more, since you see that the Day of the Lord is coming nearer.” (Hebrews 10:24-25 GNT)
